Tips for maximizing small spaces

As a professional organizer and small-space living specialist, I’ve helped many clients make the most of their small homes and apartments. Over the years, I’ve realized that with a little imagination and smart thought, even the smallest spaces can feel spacious, efficient, and attractive. In this book, I’ll reveal my top recommendations for making the most of your little space, allowing you to live in a clutter-free, comfortable home that reflects your individual style.

Embrace Multifunctional Furniture.

One of the keys to effective small-space living is selecting furniture that performs numerous functions. Instead of a standard coffee table, use an ottoman with concealed storage to keep blankets and pillows out of sight. Choose a sofa bed or daybed for the living room to easily accommodate overnight guests without taking up the full area.

For extra storage in your bedroom, try a bed with built-in drawers or a lift-up mattress. A trunk or bench at the foot of the bed can hold linens and out-of-season apparel while also giving a comfortable place to sit and put on shoes.

Go Vertical

When floor space is limited, think vertically. Install floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to increase storage and create a beautiful focal point. Use open shelving on your kitchen’s upper walls to store dishes, glassware, and cookbooks, freeing up important cabinet space.
In the bathroom, install a shelf above the door for towels and toiletries, or hang a multilayer fruit basket for a unique storage solution. Over-the-door organizers are also ideal for storing cleaning supplies, shoes, and other accessories.

Use the back of the doors

Speaking of doors, don’t forget to use the area behind them! Attach hooks or a narrow rack on the back of your bedroom door to hang robes, jackets, or scarves. Keep worktops clutter-free by mounting a spice rack or utensil holder on the back of a cabinet door.

Invest on folding furniture

Folding furniture can be a game changer in extremely confined places. A wall-mounted drop-leaf table can be used as a desk or dining table, and when not in use, it folds flat against the wall. Folding chairs are conveniently stored in a closet or beneath a bed, ready to be used for extra sitting when visitors come.

Maximize Closet Space: In tiny homes, closets are commonly underutilized storage areas. To make the most of your closet space, consider a customizable closet system with movable shelves, drawers, and hanging rods. Use slender velvet hangers to minimize space and prevent clothing from slipping. Store out-of-season clothing in vacuum-sealed bags to compress them and make room for garments you wear on a daily basis.

Divide and conquer

Creating distinct zones in a studio apartment or open-concept space can assist to make the space feel more orderly and functional. To separate your sleeping area from the living room, use a bookcase or curtain, or create a dining nook with a rug and pendant lighting. By visually dividing the area, you create a sense of flow and purpose, making it appear larger and more practical.

Reflect light with mirrors

Mirrors are an essential tool for those who live in limited spaces. They not only make a space appear larger by reflecting light and creating depth, but they also serve a practical purpose. Hang a full-length mirror on the back of your bedroom door for a fast outfit check before leaving, or place one near a window to reflect natural light throughout the space.

Choose Light Colors and Patterns

When it comes to color and pattern in a tiny space, less is usually more. Light, neutral hues on the walls, as well as larger furniture items, contribute to an airy and open feel. If you enjoy color, add it with decorations such as throw cushions, curtains, or artwork. Choose smaller-scale designs to prevent overwhelming the space.

Editing without mercy

One of the most crucial things you can do to make the most of your little area is to brutally prune your items. Regularly sift through your belongings and donate or sell everything you no longer use or enjoy. Be honest with yourself about what you really need, and let rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose or make you happy.

Get creative with storage.

Every inch counts in a tiny home, so inventive storage solutions are crucial. Use the space under your bed to keep linens, shoes, and holiday decorations. Purchase furniture with concealed storage, such as a coffee table with a lift-top or a hollow ottoman.

Consider alternatives to traditional storage containers. Repurpose decorative baskets, vintage suitcases, or even old paint cans to store everything from office supplies to bathroom necessities. By being innovative with your storage solutions, you can keep your area orderly while also displaying your distinct flair.

Living in a small area does not need you to forsake style or utility. By implementing these tips and methods, you can make your house feel more spacious, tidy, and distinctive to you. Remember, the goal is to be deliberate in your decisions, from the furniture you choose to the stuff you keep. With a little imagination and strategic thinking, you’ll be well on your way to making the most of your little area and enjoying your home.
